My Top Picks
Sons Of Liberty Gun Works MK1
The SOLGW MK1 impressed me enough to be one of my top choices.
Why It Makes the List
Performance:
Exceeded expectations for a chrome-lined barrel.
Build Quality:
Above average overall. Minor throat-area observations, but no serious obvious defects.
Gas Tuning:
My tested sample had a gas port size that was average to slightly conservative. Good real-world behavior.
Price:
Very competitive for the level of performance.
Unique Specs:
Uses SOLGW’s 3-groove polygonal rifling (P3 rifling), which helps it stand out from the crowd.
Options:
Currently limited to fewer lengths and profile choices than Criterion.
Bottom Line
If you want something a little different, modern, and performance-oriented, the MK1 deserves serious consideration.

Criterion
Criterion has been one of the strongest benchmark options for a chrome-lined barrel, offering a combination of accuracy, sensible gas tuning, broad configuration choices, and pricing that remains competitive.
Why It Makes the List
Performance:
I’ve tested several Criterion barrels over time. Most have performed very well. I’ve had a few that weren’t exceptional, but none that I would consider bad.
Gas Tuning:
Typically well-gassed. Ports tend to be average or more conservative, which many shooters will appreciate.
Price:
Excellent value considering the level of quality.
Availability:
Widely available through many retailers.
Specs / Options:
Criterion stands out by offering a .223 Wylde chamber and 1:8 twist, both less common in the chrome-lined category.
Contours:
Strong variety of profiles. Their Core contour is especially popular and for good reason.
Reputation:
Excellent reputation for both performance and customer service.
Bottom Line
Criterion is often viewed less as a pure hard-use barrel and more as a high-performance hybrid, blending durability with above-average accuracy. That makes it a strong pick for most shooters.

Other Tested Barrels: Hits and Misses
Hodge Defense
Would be one of my top picks based on performance. Good contour, solid gas port sizing, strong accuracy, and respectable build quality.
Main issue: very hard to find.
Geissele
Excellent build quality and strong overall reputation. Performance from my tested sample was only average, but I need more samples to test
Solid traditional CHF/chrome-lined option. Performance met expectations. Specs are conventional, though some contours feel dated.
FN
Mixed bag in my testing. Some excellent barrels, some underwhelming. Usually decent quality and solid options, though gas ports often run a little larger than preferred.
Centurion Arms
Interesting option with highly desirable cold hammer forged 32CrMoV12-10 Steel. Difficult to source. My sample showed mixed ammo sensitivity.
Knight's Armament Company
Acceptable performance overall, though some ammo types performed poorly. Build quality observations were less impressive than expected.
Bravo Company Manufacturing
Pretty good performance. Large gas port. Price feels high relative to what you get.
Noveske Rifleworks
Mixed results across multiple barrels. Some notable defects and generally gassier. Expensive given the inconsistency.
Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT)
Excellent build quality and sensible gas sizing. My tested sample underperformed, but I’d like to test more before making a stronger judgment.
Daniel Defense
Very unique competition-oriented concept. Excellent build quality, strong performance, rifle-length gas system, includes matched bolt. Price is steep.
Unrivaled Technologies
If I were recommending chrome-lined barrels to most people today, it would be
Criterion
SOLGW MK1
If availability wasn’t a problem, Hodge would be in the conversation as well.
For buyers who just want the quick answer, these are my picks. There are reasons why other barrel may make more sense due to budget, gas system preference, contour, intended use, etc. But these are where I would start.
